CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Drunkenness was difficult to heal, especially when someone had poisoned his body to the extent of falling unconscious…or in Leon’s case, open-eyed, blabber-mouthed unconscious. I couldn’t believe he was still awake. He was far past the point to feel pain as my mana worked through his blood. I wasn’t going to be able to do anything about the ale still in his stomach, but I could at least sober him up long enough to have a conversation.

Strangely, he closed his eyes and seemed to pass out during my healing. It was easier without him moaning and writhing on the ground, so I just kept at it, though I was a little concerned when I finished and he still hadn’t woken up.

I could feel that he was alive. I investigated with my mana to find no other issues. Was the change from poisoned-drunk to utterly sober such a shock that his body didn’t know what to do?

I tried for a while to rouse him, but nothing worked.

I sighed as I resorted to slapping his face.

His eyes fluttered open. “What?” he grumbled as he sat up and held his cheek. “What happened?”

“I healed you,” I said as I sat on my heels beside him.

“Healed me from what? What are you doing here?” He slowly got up and turned to face me. He still looked the same as before, like a vagrant on a binge, but at least his eyes had life in them again.

“I sobered you up—”

“You had no right!” He checked his pockets, then looked around. “I spent good money to get that drunk, and now you went and threw it all away. Where is the rest of my coin?”

“I have no idea.”

“And where is everyone else? Serving wench! I’m too sober!”

“Everyone’s outside.”

He glanced at the closed door, then shrugged and started toward the kitchen.

“Wait,” I said. He didn’t. “What are you doing?”

“What does it look like?”

I followed him into the kitchen as he grabbed a mug from a shelf and held it under a barrel with a tap.

“You can’t be serious,” I said as I watched him begin to fill it.

“I’m more serious than you’ve ever known me to be.”

“I’m sure you already have enough ale in your belly to become inebriated again.”

“I’ll show you inebriated.”

“I’ll just heal you again.”

That finally stopped him. He set his mug on the counter, then put his palms flat down and leaned over. “Jon, I swear, I will hurt you if you don’t leave me alone.”

“Hurt me if you want. I’ll just heal myself.”

He shuddered with visible anger.

“You’re going to have to talk to me. Might as well do it now.”

Leon turned around. “I’m goddamn starving,” he growled.

“So am I, so let’s make this quick. I want you to come back with me.”

“That’s not going to happen.”

“We both know it is, so just get on with it.”

He showed me teeth pressed together as he grabbed my shirt. “Don’t you know a broken man when you see one? It’s over for me.” He let go and stepped back.
